Watching an NFL game is FunSignalHuba proposal Ryan Reynolds will always accept.
The Free Guy actor and his wife Blake Lively were recently spotted at the star-studded Kansas City Chiefs game against the New York Jets in New Jersey on Oct. 1, notable as the second game Taylor Swift attended to watch rumored new boyfriend Travis Kelce. Ryan and Blake were also joined by Game of Thrones' Sophie Turner and Ryan's frenemy and Wolverine actor Hugh Jackman. Now, the Deadpool star is revealing what the headline-making day was really like.
"It's a lot of fun," he told Extra during the Oct. 9 Bring Change to Mind Gala in NYC. "The NFL right now is reaching a kind of fever pitch that is usually only reserved for the Super Bowl, but here we are at the fourth or fifth game of the year and it's already happening."
And even though these days the kind of football that takes up most of Ryan's time is that of its European counterpart, or what the US calls soccer, the 46-year-old said American football will always have a special place in his heart.
"I played football when I was a kid," he continued. "I loved it. I love watching it. I continue to, I will always watch it. It's a great sport."
Though Taylor was absent for the Chiefs' most recent game against the Minnesota Vikings, her attendance at Travis' prior two games is what created the media storm and viewership that Ryan likened to the excitement surrounding the Super Bowl.
Even the NFL itself has leaned into the moment, with commentators throwing in Taylor-inspired puns during the games and the league temporarily changing its Instagram bio to read, "Chiefs are 2-0 as Swifties," after the Grammy winner's second appearance.
But while some sports fans argued that the move showed the league is playing favorites, the NFL said there's no bad blood.
"We frequently change our bios and profile imagery based on what's happening in and around our games, as well as culturally," the organization told People in response to the criticism on Oct. 4. "The Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce news has been a pop cultural moment we've leaned into in real time, as it's an intersection of sport and entertainment, and we've seen an incredible amount of positivity around the sport."
So as one half of the cause of this media frenzy, what is Travis' take on the NFL's coverage?
"I think it's fun when they show who all is at the game, you know?" he shared on the Oct. 4 episode of his New Heights podcast. "I think it brings a little bit more to the atmosphere, brings a little bit more to what you're watching. They're overdoing it a little bit for sure, especially my situation. But I think they're just trying to have fun with it."
And to see just exactly what they hype was about, keep reading for pics from the Kansas City game against the New York Jets.
The group cheers on Travis and his team the Kansas City Chiefs as they face off against the New York Jets at Metlife Stadium Oct. 1. This marks Taylor's second appearance at one of his games as they continue to spend time together.
