Chappell Roan was hot to go on the 2024 MTV Video Music Awards—but not in the way you'd think.
Before hitting the stage at New York's UBS Arena Sept. 11, the "Good Luck, Babe!" singer had a heated confrontation on the red carpet. (Click here to see all celerbrity arrivals.)
As seen in video footage circulating on social media, Chappell—with her back facing photographers—was in the middle of adjusting her Y/Project gown when she heard someone in the crowd shout, "Shut the f--k up!"
The 26-year-old quickly spun around and screamed back, "You shut the f--k up!"
After several cheers from onlookers, Chappell went on to shut down the heckler. Wagging her finger, she sternly added, "No. Not me, b---h."
Indeed, Chappell—nominated for four MTV VMAs awards, including Best New Artist and Best Trending Video for "Hot To Go!"—is not afraid to clap back. Last month, she called out "entitled" fans for crossing personal boundaries.
“I don’t care that this crazy type of behavior comes along with the job, the career field I’ve chosen," she said in an Aug. 19 TikTok. “That does not make it OK. That doesn’t make it normal. That doesn’t mean I want it. That doesn’t mean that I like it."
The "Punk Pony Club" artist continued, "It’s weird how people think that you know a person just because you see them online and you listen to the art they make. That’s f--king weird. I’m allowed to say no to creepy behavior."
And Chappell does not care if that's what makes her an outsider in the music industry. As told E! News correspondent Will Marfuggi in an exclusive interview at the VMAs, "Freaks deserve trophies."
